BIOGRAPHY
|
|
Priti Gandhi has been praised for her "dazzling, shimmering coloratura"wrapped in a "lustrous voice." A native of Bombay, India, Ms. Gandhi has been described by Revista Pro Opera as "velvet toned, luscious looking"while Classical Singer Magazine hails her for "the exquisite colorations of her opulent voice."
With a performing career that began in San Diego, she has since appeared in roles such as Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni, Dorabella in Cosí fan tutte (for which she earned a 2004 Austin Critics Table Awards nomination), Cenerentola and stepsister Tisbe in La Cenerentola, Echo in Ariadne auf Naxos, Mallika in Lakmé and the Second Lady in Die Zauberflöte with such noted companies as Seattle Opera, San Diego Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Michigan Opera Theatre, Lyric Opera Cleveland, the Estates Theatre in Prague, and Opera Aguascalientes of Mexico. Of her recent performances as Varvara in San Diego Opera's Kat'a Kabanova, critics had to say, "Her voice has matured into a richer, fuller sound with a bell-like clarity and sweet, velvety tone. She can go toe to toe dramatically with (Patricia) Racette, and she has a playful joyous intimacy with her onstage lover, Kudriash"
In concert, she has been a featured soloist with the Mainly Mozart Festival, the San Diego Symphony, and the La Jolla Symphony in works such as Mozart's Mass in C Minor, Luciano Berio's Folksongs, and Mozart's Mass in C, Spatzen-Messe.
Ms. Gandhi has sung under the baton of celebrated conductors such as Richard Bonynge, Edoardo Mueller, Gerard Schwarz, John Fiore, Mark Flint, Asher Fisch, and David Atherton. Directors with whom she has worked include Leon Major, Michael Hampe, Lotfi Mansouri, François Rochaix, Chris Alexander, Sharon Ott, and Sonja Frisell.
Ms. Gandhi has merited awards and recognition abroad and at home; a participant in the prestigious 2000 International AntonĂn Dvorák Competition of the Czech Republic, Ms. Gandhi earned 3rd Place overall, as well as special recognition awards from the Dvorák Society and the Opera Mozart Association of Prague. In the United States, she was named a Western Regional Finalist of the 1999 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, as well as 1st Place Winner in the 1997 Palm Springs Opera Guild Competition.
Early in her career as a promising artist, Ms. Gandhi was the subject of a documentary co-produced by San Diego Opera and UCSD-TV, entitled "The Education of an Opera Singer." Her recordings include Anthony Davis's contemporary opera Tania (based on the abduction of Patty Hearst), available on Koch International Classics.
Upcoming engagements in 2005 include her Paris debut as Waltraute in the Théâtre du Châtelet's Die Walküre (in the Ring Cycle conducted by Christoph Eschenbach). She returns to the role of Rossini's Cenerentola with Dayton Opera and Lyric Opera of San Diego in 2006.

OPERA WEST, April 2004

"...A superb cast through and through carried this opera to success... soprano Priti Gandhi was charming as the flirtatious somewhat amoral Varvara"
David Gregson,
Review of San Diego OperaÂ’s Kat'a Kabanova |
|
OPERA JAPONICA, May 2004
|
|
"Varvara, the foster daughter living in that household, was brilliantly sung and incisively acted by mezzo soprano, Priti Gandhi. Her lover, Vanya, was sung with lustrous tones by tenor, Doug Jones, who exhibited a delightful boyish charm. The moments they spent together were the happiest in the story and the audience seemed pleased to see them finally run away to the city"
